Comments/contents:
Panel data offer the possibility to trace individual development paths over time. The course provides an overview of important panel studies and is dedicated to the specific characteristics and analysis possibilities of this type of studies using the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) as an example.

Learning objectives:
The own methodical-analytical skills are to be applied and deepened in the field of quantitative, multivariate analysis. The complex structure and the special requirements of panel data are in the foreground. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct their own statistical data analyses. They will also practice how to design empirical work with secondary data, how to describe the data set, and finally how to present the research results. Good prior knowledge of Stata, SPSS or R as well as the willingness to work with Stata are a prerequisite for successful participation in this course.

Didactic concept:
In the first part of the seminar, textbook chapters and research articles will be presented and discussed in plenary. In the second part, the participants will be introduced to the data structure of the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) and will be given exercises to practice what they have learned with Stata. The course instructor will provide supportive advice on the design of homework assignments. Individual papers or group papers can be written by two persons.
